On average a student has 6 hours of school per day, 5 days a week, that's 30 hours spent on school. Subtracting that from 168 total hours in a week this leaves 138 hours of free time. If we then subtract 7 hours of sleep a night which is 49 hours per week, we are left with about 89 hours of waking free time. If we assume that students spend around 25% of that time on homework and studying 22 hours, that leaves about 67 hours of free time. Finally, if we assume that students spend about 30% of their free time on extracurricular activities such as a sport, club, or a job (20 hours), that leaves about 47 hours of free time per week. So what do students truly do with this time?
During the pandemic, it was very difficult to be able to engage with others in a safe manner while following the rules and regulations that had been implemented. Before COVID 19 most of us would either go to a friend's house or an enclosed space such as a movie theater or bowling alley to hang out. However, this all changed in 2020 when we were informed of the effects that the virus could have on both ourselves and our loved ones. This is when I along with many began taking an interest in outdoor activities such as hiking. While at first I only wanted to part take in this activity to connect with my peers. I eventually began to discover all of the positive effects that it has had on both my physical and mental well-being. For this activity has allowed for me to give myself time to think and process information that life has thrown towards me and make stronger connections with those I love.
At Heart of Hiking, we are passionate about the outdoors and allowing for people connect with nature especially within our rather small community in Napa California. While my love for hiking may have started in 2020, today I still continue to go on more and more hikes with those that I am grateful to have in my life.
We believe in responsible and sustainable practices that protect the environment and support of local Napa community. We are committed to promoting positive physical health, mental health, inclusivity, and accessibility to the outdoors.
